LUXURIA // DESIRE & DECEPTION

Friday 8th of March 17-19 2019
Pavillon No. 11 Kronprinsessegade 11, Kbh K

Luxuria is an exhibition about desire and deception. Our craving for luxurious excess and our longing for pleasure. Danish artist Mie Mogensen will exhibit works in two shows at Pavillon No 11 in King’s Garden in Copenhagen.
The first show will offer an array of juicy fruits and attractive vegetables, a largescale alluring relief on the wall and pompous ceramics. A kind of large-format still life installation, where all the works are part of a larger narrative that revolves around the sinful surrender to luxuria aka lust, which the Italian theologian and philosopher Thomas Aquinas noted as one of seven deadly sins.
With abundance, ambiguous motives and material effects Mogensen reminds us of how extravagance is a human urge in all of us.
The following show will be a shadow story of the first. It will be more ascetic and reduced to the colours black and white. The works will be in 2D and resonate the consequences of uncontrolled submission.
Inspired by the baroque and it’s aesthetics, Mogensen makes use of a recognizable imagery and updates the medieval moral doctrine in a contemporary manner. With Rosenborg Castle in the background and King Christian the IV's great appetite for life and his hazardous lifestyle, Mogensen mirrors the lively king's beloved renaissance castle and the inciting works in the small pavilion emphasizing the mutual issues at stake.

Mie Mogensen has an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, 2013. Mogensen has primarily exhibited in the USA, where she has had solo shows and participated in group exhibitions. She has been based in San Francisco, London and Reykjavik and is now residing in Copenhagen. Mogensen works in a broad field of media such as drawing, ceramics, concrete, vinyl and video.

Article ablut the show

Secrets, longings, dilemmas and ghosts are exposed and explored when Danish artist Mie Mogensen and American artist Carissa Potter let you peek inside a private home, which has been transformedinto a fictional domestic space.
Odd kitchenware, unbridled plants, dark and amorphous ceramic objects, and a huge book case ofwritings are some of the works which have inhabited the homely space. The two artists twist and turn life paradoxes and human conditions with their confessions and exposed fragility. They alsocelebrate creative women and examine the empowerment of sharing and articulating suchvulnerable and compromising issues.

The installation elements are all related to the interior functions. They are somehow in dialogue or disruptive interaction with the connotations of a domestic space.
In a greenhouse in the backyard there will be a sound piece which comprises, taboos, andconversation topics the two artists have engaged with throughout the recent years.

Mie Mogensen received her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2013. Mogensen has primarily exhibited in the US, where she has had solo exhibitions and participated in group shows. She has lived in San Francisco, and London, and she is now based in Copenhagen. Mogensen works in awide range of media such as drawing, ceramics, concrete, vinyl and video, where she speaks of theartist role, draws up narratives and personal life stories.

Carissa Potter has received her MFA in printmaking in 2015 from the San Francisco Art Institute. Potter lives and works in Oakland, California. She primarily works with drawing, printed works, and assembled objects. Her drawings, prints and writings are humorous and poignant comments on life situations. She is a founding member of Colpa Press and founder of People I’ve Loved by which she has published books, created ceramic projects and printed textiles.
